Chapter Five- Our Debate

“I’m telling you, this is not something you can argue about,” I told Harry as we sat down at a table in the cafeteria.

“It clearly is,” he shot back, sitting opposite me. “Or we wouldn’t be having this discussion.”

“But you can’t compare the two!” I protested. “You can like one or the other, or both, but you can’t compare them.”

“You blatantly can!”

“You blatantly can’t!” I retorted.

“Can’t what?” Dougie wanted to know, sliding into the seat next to Harry with his tray. He leaned over to peck his boyfriend on the lips lightly before turning to me.

“What’s your favourite band?” I asked him. I thought I knew, but I wasn’t assuming that it hadn’t changed.

He bit into a chip, chewed thoughtfully, “Blink-182. Why?”

“We have a question…”

“Who’s better: Slipknot or Green Day?” Harry demanded bluntly.

Dougie pursed his lips, chewing once more, “You can’t really compare the two.”

I pumped my fist happily as Harry’s face fell, “That’s exactly what I was saying!”

“They’re completely different music genres,” he pointed out.

Harry sulked into his sandwich, “This isn’t fair. No wonder you two dated for so long…”

Dougie and I exchanged a confused glance over the table, “What d’you mean?”

“Well, you’re just so alike, aren’t you?”

Another glance. “Erm… I guess…”

“We weren’t dating for that long…”

“Eleven months- almost a year.”

Dougie pouted at him cutely, “Are you trying to get rid of me? Am I not a good boyfriend?”

“You’re amazing,” Harry said with a laugh. He leaned over and kissed Dougie softly, before turning back to his lunch.

“I want a boyfriend,” I announced randomly.

Another chuckle escaped Harry’s lips, “Why?”

“I dunno. You two just look so perfect, and amazing. You’re comfortable with each other, but you’re not always sexually active- which is a relief after your last girlfriend. But, yeah. It’s proper. I want that.”

Harry shrugged, “Then stop sitting round complaining to us and do something about it.”

I rolled my eyes, “Like it that’s easy! I sent the only guy remotely interested in me off to say yes to the fit guy in his street!” I glanced at Dougie, noticed he was staring at me with his eyes wide and his mouth slightly open, “What?”

He realised what he was doing and cleared his throat in embarrassment, “Sorry.” I frowned at him in confusion.

“You didn’t want to go out with Matt anyway, did you?” Harry asked, drawing my attention back to him and off his boyfriend- who was now staring down at his chips with a definite blush.

“No.”

He smiled at me, “Then wait for someone you actually like in that way. And, when he comes along, go for it.”
